WEBINATTER: Self-advocacy & Self-care

We are delighted that the Midlands Regional Natter Group will be hosting May’s National Webi-Natter and welcome Elle Reed, Counselling Psychologist, from Maggie’s Manchester as our guest speaker

Self-advocacy for health, is about partnership in care: working together, with your specialist and everyday healthcare teams, to make decisions about care and treatment choices.

Researchers describe self-advocacy as ‘the ability of an individual with cancer to overcome challenges in getting their preferences, needs, and values met’.

“We may have a lot of faith in our medical team, and that’s a good thing. But sometimes, we need to make sure we are being heard and the appropriate actions are being taken to make sure we receive the best care” ~ Anna

Although your team may be specialists in your diagnosis and how it is treated, you are the specialist in you – you know you and your body best, and will have your own preferences, beliefs and priorities in care decision-making: ‘what matters most to you’

But it can be challenging – you may feel anxious, uncertain, angry and/or vulnerable – or may not want to be seen to question your medical team. It can be tiring / exhausting . . . but it does deliver rewards / benefits:

“in ‘living with’ we become experts in coping and we learn to understand our own boundaries, and thus what we need” ~ Kate

and your team learns how best to support you – physically and mentally -tailoring care to your needs, remembering that you, as one consultant has said, are ‘the most important person in the room’.

Elle will speak about the importance of self-care, and having a voice, in living with cancer

. . . and what might help to support you, in living well with it.
