National ONLINE WEBINATTER – Managing Moments – Triggers and Flares
–
This month’s webinar will focus on Managing Moments – understanding and identifying triggers, recognising physical or emotional responses, and exploring techniques for self-management. We are thrilled to welcome Lucy Aubrey, a Cancer Support Specialist from Maggie’s in Swansea, as our speaker.
Triggers and Flares
Triggers and flares vary widely from person to person, evoking either a physical, emotional, or combined response. A trigger might be a memory, date, person, or activity. For example, a song may prompt a joyful or painful memory; if the response is uncomfortable – causing sadness, anxiety, or anger – it may be felt both physically and emotionally.
Recognising and Managing Physical Reactions
Learning to recognise early physical signs, like changes in breathing, can help activate coping strategies to ease discomfort. For instance, if you feel anxious before or during an MRI scan, mindfulness techniques, such as four-square breathing or grounding, may help.
