Neuroendocrine Cancer UK Community Reported Creon® Shortage : August 2023
For a number of people with Neuroendocrine Cancer – pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) is an essential part of daily life – taken to promote and maintain nutritional uptake and manage certain symptoms.
Pancreatic Enzyme Insufficiency and PERT
We have recently been contacted by members our community expressing concerns about the availability of Creon® – with some saying that they have been unable to get their prescription filled.
We have contacted Viatris/Mylan Pharma UK Ltd – the company that produces Creon® – to clarify the situation – they replied very quickly:
“Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience you have experienced with supply.
Creon (Pancreatin) Caps 10000 X 100 and Creon (Pancreatin) Caps 25000 X 100 are currently available and pharmacies can order via AAH, Alliance and Phoenix wholesalers.
If your local depot is advising Out Of Stock, our next deliveries are anticipated week ending 25th August.”
In the meantime, if needed, alternative preparations are available – these include:
■ Nutrizym®
■ Pancrease®
■ Pancrex®
All preparations contain a mixture of all of the same pancreatic enzymes contained in Creon® : lipase; amylase and protease – though the dosage combination may alter slightly.
If you are experiencing difficulties in renewing or obtaining your Creon® prescription – you can ask give this information to your pharmacy – and/or ask your medical team / GP to prescribe one of these alternatives.
Please Note: Not all pharmacies routinely keep a stock of these alternatives – and may require a few days to order in your replacement prescription.
